Given The Task to Protect Babies
The Indian River County Healthy Start Coalition was formed by local community members and maternal child health care providers in 1992. The community actively sought funding from Florida’s Healthy Start Initiative (enacted 1991) so that a prenatal and infant health care coalition could be developed for Indian River County (IRC). Forming the coalition gave IRC’s maternal child health advocates and stakeholders a central planning structure to effect positive changes in maternal health care, birth outcomes and early infant development. Abiding by the Florida Statute, the Coalition does not provide direct services, instead is a lead agency is granted the responsibility of selecting providers, conducting strategic planning, assessing data outcomes, and conducting quality improvement plans for subcontractors who services over 1,200 births a year.
IRCHSC is rigorous in selecting direct service providers that will make the most impact on the health of mothers and babies in Indian River County and thereby fulfilling our mission. In conjunction with these providers, we have been effective in reducing infant mortality and low infant birth weight to meet state averages.
We link mothers to insurance coverage and social support that can guide and empower them to make healthy choices and positive changes.
We also focus on education of the parents to eliminate all factors which impede the child’s mental, emotional or physical development or well-being.
Indian River County Healthy Start Coalition’s (IRCHSC) mission is to establish and support a local system of care that optimizes the health of moms, babies and their families living in Indian River County. We accomplish this goal by focusing on the need to strengthen and enhance our system of maternal and infant care by increasing awareness of infant mortality, streamlining services to be efficient and economical, and most importantly, building partnerships among families, volunteers, and other maternal and young child advocates to collaborate on processes to improve the poor conditions in our local area experienced by our very youngest, our babies.
To see every infant has the opportunity for good health and positive early learning experiences that unfold within strong family relationships.
The Mission of the Indian River County Healthy Start Coalition is to establish and support a local system of care that optimizes the health of moms, babies and their families living in Indian River County.
